Try never to get it wet or muddy, and vacuum regularly.
Occasionally lift the matting, if you can, to sweep up the bits of dirt that fall through the holes.
Most types can be cleaned with a dry foam carpet shampoo, but test on a discreet area first. If anything spills on it, mop up immediately using the tiniest amount of carpet shampoo.
Keep a carton of milk in the freezer so that if you get back very late you know you’ll be able to make yourself a cuppa in the morning.
Don’t leave dirty dishes in the dishwasher, as a fair old stink will have developed by the time you come back home!

Put them back on while still very slightly damp (say, before you go to bed).
This will ease shaping and reduce shrinkage.

Add a capful of fabric conditioner to a bucket of water, rinse the mop in it, then squeeze dry and leave till the next use.
It’ll always be lovely and soft.

I was a bit sceptical that any vacuum brush roll could remain hair-free. But I’ve put the new Bissell MultiReach Active 21V Tangle Free Cordless Vacuum through its paces…and, as if by magic, not a single strand in the brush roll – they all end up in the easy-to-empty dirt tank!

Sometimes a grease mark on a garment doesn’t come out in the wash. And once it’s washed, it’s set in.
For an effective pre-laundry treatment, squirt a dot of Fairy Liquid on the dampened stain, rub fabric to fabric and wash in the machine as normal.
For ground-in greyness on shirt collars and cuffs, rub a wet bar of soap along the marks before popping in the machine.

hasn’t it been a very horrid time for all of us during lockdown – I spent my time painting – but I’d like to know what you did to get you through?

Set a stopwatch and go for it – be faster and more efficient. And only clean an item or surface if it needs it.

Buy small quantities of flour, nuts and sugar, and store them in sealed plastic boxes.
That way, you have more chance of staying free of weevils and flour moths.

If your machine is particularly noisy and located in the kitchen, it can be a nuisance. Sort this by standing the machine on a carpet offcut – things will get a whole lot calmer around the place!
