Black jeans looking a bit grey?

Chances are that rather than losing dye, it will be because of a build-up of detergent residue.

To sort this, soak for a few hours in warm water with a little clear vinegar added.

How to look after your new mattress

First of all buy a good, thick cover for it – this will be your best protection – and wash about once a month.

You should turn the mattress over monthly, and alternate between turning over and rotating it from top to tail to ensure even wear. It usually takes two people!

Some mattresses should not be turned (the label will guide you) but you should still rotate from top to tail each month or so.

Give it a vacuum every now and then, with the machine set on a low suction level.

Store your glasses the right way up!

I never understand why some people store glasses upside down. Any lingering smells will be trapped and the rim is the easiest part to get damaged.

Once you’ve washed and dried, always keep them right side up, and never stack good glasses.

Missing a piece from your treasured dinner set?

Don’t despair because the chances are that Chinasearch (01926 512402; www.chinasearch.co.uk), will have what you’re looking for.

And if they don’t, they will scour the country for it. There’s no registration fee, nor any obligation to buy. They contact you when they find the piece you need (anything from a saucer to a full dinner service).

Prices depend on availability/rarity, so they can’t quote until sourced, but generally it will be in good, used condition, and sometimes new.

Take a look at Peek Polish

It’s been around for years and in 2005 was awarded the Royal Warrant as purveyors of metal polish.

While its uses include perking up aeroplanes and keeping the former Royal Yacht Britannia tarnish-free, it is very effective on more everyday objects such as brass, window frames and sinks.

Keep your brick fireplace looking good

Brush the bricks regularly with a soft brush or the vacuum cleaner attachment.

If dirt has built up, scrub with neat vinegar using a hard brush, then rinse.

Do not use detergent as it could be absorbed by the brick and might be difficult to remove.

Keep your bedlinen looking pristine

Turn your pillows over each night as you get into bed and when you get up in the morning, turn them back over again.

No grease, mascara or dribble marks are visible if you get into this routine!

Keep your drains unclogged

Keep your drains free-flowing and sweet-smelling by running through a handful of washing soda crystals followed by a kettle of boiling water every couple of months.

Ink on leather

How annoying is it when you notice a ballpoint mark on the outside of your favourite, pale-coloured leather handbag?

If you act quickly, you might be lucky. First try rubbing with a soft cloth dipped in milk. If that doesn’t work, hairspray usually does (applied in the same way).

Best to test on an inconspicuous area first to make sure it doesn’t affect the dye.
