A few clever time saving tips

Sweep your front path or porch as part of your regular cleaning routine – trailing in leaves and mud on shoes will only create extra work.

When you apply a cleaning spray, leave it a few minutes while you clean something else – during that time the spray will have started to work and marks will wipe off more easily.

Do a little each day – even 10 minutes extra every morning or evening means you’ll have more chance to keep on top of things and will free up more time at the weekends.

When washing walls, start at the bottom and work upwards so that any dirty trickles will get absorbed by the already wet surface.

Bring that mouldy tent back to life

If you’ve got the tent out for the first time since last year, and it’s flecked with mould and smells musty, don’t just throw it away. And don’t stick it in the washing machine either because if it has taped seams they’ll get damaged.

What you need to do is erect the tent in the garden and vacuum off the mould spores.

Now sponge over a diluted solution of Milton (about 1 tbsp per litre of warm water). Then follow up with a tent cleaner such as Nikwax Tech Wash.

You’ll also need a waterproofer (Nikwax Tent & Gear Solarproof); instructions are on the packs. Happy camping!

Perfect windows quickly

If you’re washing windows and the outside is thick with dust and cobwebs, remove the worst with a dustpan and brush, otherwise once you start washing you’ll create a sea of mud.

And choose a cloudy day – heat dries liquid too quickly and will leave you with a streaky finish.

Clear out and clean up

You may not be planning a major autumn clean, but a rainy Sunday is a good time to declutter kitchen drawers.

Locate all the duplicate peelers, corkscrews, tin openers and the like. Choose your favourite and take the others to the charity shop.

No more smelly trainers!

Tea tree oil, available from chemists and health food shops, works a treat on smelly shoes.

Just sprinkle a few drops on to the insole. Tea tree is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, so will help with any foot infections too.

Don’t be a drip

Candles burning in a church background

To stop candles dripping, keep them in the freezer. This is particularly useful for cake candles – no more wax running into icing!

Next time you’re painting…

Clean oil-based paint off your hands with vegetable oil – better for your skin than white spirit. Wash with soap afterwards.

New carpet being fitted?

Hang on to any small offcuts.

That way, if you have a stain later on and need to treat it with a solvent, you can use the offcut to test on before you risk bleaching the carpet!

A great cover story

Next time you stay away overnight (whenever that will be!), if there’s a disposable shower cap in the toiletries package, take it home.

They’re great as covers for a bowl of leftovers in the fridge.
