Don’t waste a good chicken carcass!

If you roast a chicken and don’t have enough time afterwards to boil the carcass for stock, wrap it well, stick in the freezer and boil it another day

Straight from the freezer – when you have more time!

An easy way to clean your barbecue

Scrunch up aluminium foil and take it back and forth across the grilling bars to get the worst off. Then scrub that part in the sink using a strong solution of soda crystals (200g to 500ml hot water).

How to keep your nails clean when gardening

Gardening gloves are sometimes awkward, and rubber gloves are plain odd in the garden.

I don’t like getting soil right under my nails, though, as it takes so long to clean out. What I do is stick a bar of soap under the warm tap then run my nails down the length of the bar.

That way, the space under the nails is taken up and there’s no spare room for the dirt! Good, too, for little ones when they’re painting or making mud pies.

Afterwards, just take a wet nailbrush gently along the undersides.

My cashmere cardi bargain from a while back was covered in bobbles. Of course I could pick them off one by one, but they were like a rash!

Then I came across the wonderful battery-operated Lint Shaver from Russel that removes pills and fuzz effortlessly;

Mould removal

If the grouting in your bathroom is covered in mould, but you don’t want to use chemical sprays on it, douse in vodka instead.

Leave to soak for a good 15 minutes and then scrub off – you should be left mould-free.

Ivory

Ivory needs to be exposed to daylight so it can bleach naturally and stay creamy, so best to use daily.

Hand-wash in soapy water and dry immediately as water can seep into the joints and soften the glue that attaches the handles.
