You’re probably using too much detergent, and it’s not being rinsed properly.

Try running a few clean towels, without detergent, on the rinse programme and see how many suds are there!

If so, use less detergent from now on.

Cut flowers will last longer if you add a mix of vodka (just a few drops) and sugar to a vase of water instead of traditional plant feed.

Insects do not like vodka, in fact, it can kill them, so spritzing yourself with vodka instead of DEET should effectively keep mosquitoes away.

Good old vinegar: its uses are seemingly endless. If you have a baby in the house, add a cup of clear distilled vinegar to each load of baby clothes during the rinse cycle.

The vinegar will naturally break down any traces of uric acid and soapy residue, and will leave the clothes feeling soft and smelling fresh.

There are many ways, but my favourite is to knock the edge of the lid in a couple of places against a hard surface. Works every time!

The outside of it can be prone to rust and damp – apply a layer of car wax to stop the metal from rusting.

Make your pet’s food anti-ant by placing the bowl in a container of water that’s only slightly larger than the bowl – that’ll stop the critters in their tracks!

Do not rub at the stain. Shake off as much loose powder as possible. Hold the fabric over the sink and tap the back of it with an old toothbrush to remove more powder.

Take the toothbrush carefully over the stain then sponge with soapy water.

Afterwards machine-wash at hottest possible cycle for the fabric.
