Keep your loo smelling sweet

It’s an old remedy, but it works every time: keep a box of matches in the loo (high up away from little, inquisitive fingers). Once the match is struck, the sulphur given off completely cuts through and kills off the offensive odours. The bathroom will be safe to enter now, without fear of passing out…

How to reach those high-up spider’s webs

I do feel a bit cruel sometimes getting rid of a spider’s web (all that beautiful work that’s gone in!) but the trouble is I have a reputation to protect! So out comes my telescopic duster, which gets right into all the corners easily without having to perch unsteadily on a chair.

Lakeland has a good stock at various prices – just make sure it’s washable and made of microfibre (that way it collects the dust and locks it in rather that just moving it around).

Stop static shocks from your clothes

Static build-up is caused by the combination of positive and negative ions in your clothes, and synthetic fibres are big culprits. Adding fabric conditioner to the final rinse usually calms things down.

If it doesn’t work, try again, but add an extra half cupful. Moisturising your skin will also help, as will placing bowls of water near radiators (static gets worse in a very dry atmosphere).

The other thing you can do is to ‘brush’ your item of clothing with a wire coat hanger just before putting it on.

Careful when cleaning your loo seat!

When you’re next cleaning the loo, be careful with the loo seat –  some chemical cleaners can do lasting damage. And once the  seat gets colour spots or the wood is bleached out, you’ll have to replace it.

Best to clean the seat separately with no chemicals and a microfibre cloth (stick it in the washing machine after each use).

Don’t cry over spilt cream…

Your pot of cream in the supermarket shopping has spilled in the back of the car…how to get rid of the sour smell?

Clean with a solution of Milton Sterilising Fluid (1-2 tbsp per litre of warm water); from chemists everywhere.

Get that dent out of the carpet

You’ve decided on a furniture reshuffle but the indentation marks left in the carpet seem permanent and spoil your new look.

You need to pour a little hot water into the dip and then, with the tines of a fork, gently tease the pile until it stands up nicely alongside the rest of the carpet.

A quick cleaning tip

Yes, we’re all supposed to pull out the fridge regularly to clean behind, but how many of us do? A good halfway house is to cover a broom handle with a damp cloth or clean old sock, secure with a rubber band and have a good old delve.

You might be amazed at what you’ll unearth!

Smelly laundry basket?

If you wait till the laundry basket is bulging before bringing down the washing, lessen the impact of lingering odours by keeping a tumble-dryer sheet in the bottom of the basket; replace every couple of months.
