Take care to avoid a house fire

Thousands of household fires are caused every year through misuse or faults with electrical appliances – often it’s because of things like old food and fat build-up on cookers or not clearing the toaster crumb tray.

If you’re worried or want more information, contact the Electrical Safety Council: www.esc.org.uk.

A clever way to cut down on cleaning

Do your kitchen cupboards reach almost but not quite to the ceiling? The tops will take on that nasty combination of grease and dust.

Save yourself cleaning time by laying down sheets of newspaper and every so often remove and replace with new sheets.

An old beer stain on the sofa

Make up a solution of 1 part vinegar to 5 parts warm water and sponge carefully but thoroughly (test for colourfastness on the back of the sofa), then go over with a clean cotton cloth and clear warm water.

Allow to dry naturally.

Never tip cooking fat down the sink

It’s bound to solidify and block the drainer.

If some does go down and things slow up, put a handful of washing soda crystals over the opening and pour a kettleful of boiling water down.

At the same time use a plunger – the chances are you’ll easily clear the blockage.

When you need help getting gunk out of the plughole

Drain Weasel will do the job for you: the disposable ‘microhooks’ on the head get a hold of and grab up any discarded hair (which is usually what’s blocking the drain).

Then just a flick of the quick-release handle ensures you don’t have to go near the nasty clump!

eating less meat?

Many of us are now eating less meat, but do lentils and other pulses sometimes leave you bloated and, frankly, full of wind? A good way to counter this is to include fennel seeds (whole or crushed) in your cooking – they’re a great digestion aid.

It’s never too early to start decluttering…

I helped my friend move house recently. She’s efficient…but also a secret hoarder. What a job! Every cupboard was stuffed, and the kitchen spice drawer rammed with Safeway jars (the brand disappeared in 2004!). A lesson: it’s never too early to start decluttering…
