Bring that mouldy tent back to life

If you’ve got the tent out for the first time since last year, and it’s flecked with mould and smells musty, don’t just throw it away. And don’t stick it in the washing machine either because if it has taped seams they’ll get damaged.

What you need to do is erect the tent in the garden and vacuum off the mould spores.

Now sponge over a diluted solution of Milton (about 1 tbsp per litre of warm water). Then follow up with a tent cleaner such as Nikwax Tech Wash.

You’ll also need a waterproofer (Nikwax Tent & Gear Solarproof); instructions are on the packs. Happy camping!

Magically get those marks off your walls

I always have a Magic Eraser Block on hand – I don’t know why everyone doesn’t. It’s a super-strength sponge made from melamine foam and when you dampen it, it’ll remove practically any stain from any hard surface…so no need for despair when visiting toddlers decorate the wall with their new crayons.

The only problem is that sometimes it can be a little too effective on say a painted wall or polished surface, but as long as you go gently, you’ll be fine. And you can cut into any shape or size to tackle awkward nooks and crannies.

Clear out and clean up

You may not be planning a major autumn clean, but a rainy Sunday is a good time to declutter kitchen drawers.

Locate all the duplicate peelers, corkscrews, tin openers and the like. Choose your favourite and take the others to the charity shop.

No more smelly trainers!

Cosmetic oil bubbles and dropper with oil on white background. Abstract drops of skin care oil.

Tea tree oil, available from chemists and health food shops, works a treat on smelly shoes.

Just sprinkle a few drops on to the insole. Tea tree is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, so will help with any foot infections too.

New carpet being fitted?

Hang on to any small offcuts.

That way, if you have a stain later on and need to treat it with a solvent, you can use the offcut to test on before you risk bleaching the carpet!

Does more wattage equal more power?

Not necessarily, particularly when it comes to vacuum cleaners. What’s important is effective suction/pick-up, a not-too-full bag and a regularly cleaned filter.

Keep your cords smart

When you’re washing corduroy trousers, turn them inside out to avoid crushing the pile.

Use a warm cycle, a relatively low spin, then iron on the wrong side of the fabric to further protect the pile.

Liquid or powder washing detergent?

Liquid’s good for greasy stains and as a spot cleaner and pre-treater.

Powder is cheaper and fine for general loads and households free of small children and food stains.
