How to look after your glass-topped table

It seems a good idea when new…then it’s an absolute bind to keep it looking good.

The surface will scratch easily so protective coasters and cloths are a good idea.

Clean smears with a damp cloth wrung out in warm soapy water and buff dry.

Any chips or scratches can sometimes be filed down with the finest grade of sandpaper.

Sofa covered in pet hair?

As a nation we love our pets, but sometimes their hairs on the sofa and chairs can be a real pain. If you don’t want to be constantly vacuuming them up, a quick inbetween solution is to don a pair of rubber gloves, run your hands quickly under the tap and take them over the hairs, from one side of the sofa to the other.

The hair will obediently be pushed along by the rubber gloves, then all you do is gather up the clumps and put them in the bin.

How to keep tops of kitchen cupboards clean

Kitchen jason-leung-7iuasVqkUjs-unsplash

Do your kitchen cupboards reach almost but not quite to the ceiling?

The tops will take on that nasty, hard-to-shift combination of grease and dust.

Save yourself cleaning time by laying down sheets of newspaper and every so often remove and replace with new sheets.

Goo on your iron’s soleplate?

While it’s warm, rub with a nylon scourer and a little non-gel toothpaste. Wipe clean with a damp cloth. And next time you’re ironing a T-shirt with a motif that might stick, turn it inside out.

Smelly microwave?

To freshen up your microwave, chop up a used lemon, put in a bowl of hot water and cook on high for 3-4 minutes.

The steam will loosen the dirt and the lemon will deodorise any lingering smells.

Keep a clean dish cloth

The clue’s in the nose: if it smells, it’ll be heaving with germs and each time you use it you’ll be spreading them about very nicely.

It needs to go in the washing machine, and on a 60 degree wash if possible.

Electric toothbrush playing up?

If your electric toothbrush starts whimpering instead of buzzing, get an emery board and rub the top off and all around the spindle – chances are that’ll clear the blockage and sort it!

A subscriber asks – The clothes are wet and full of mould

Hi Aggie, I hope you can help me. I found a bag of my summer clothes in my loft that were leaning against a stone wall. The clothes are wet and full of mould. Can you advise how I can remove the mould? Will it be killed by the washing machine? Many thanks in advance. Kathryn Douglas

Hi Kathryn
Sorry for the delay in replying. If you’ve not already done so, anything that can normally be put in the washing machine should go in there, and the mould spores will be removed.
However I’m pretty sure that the mould stains won’t come out.  The only thing that will remove those is a bleach-based product.  And you should only use bleach on whites as if used on coloureds they will remove the colour.
If I were you I\d probably chuck the whole bag out and look at getting the loft waterproofed.
Wish you well,
Aggie

How to avoid mould in your bathroom

If you don’t have an extractor fan, try to open the window as much as possible after a shower or bath for a good airflow.

If you’re having a bath, run the cold tap first, followed by the hot, which will reduce steam (safer, too, if children are around).

For a mouldy shower curtain, machine-wash on a wool cycle with a capful of bleach added to the drawer; rehang straight from the machine.

Limescale licked!

There’s no need to resort to expensive, strong products to attack limescale.

Much better to stick to homemade remedies, which are just as effective, and a lot cheaper.

If your chrome showerhead is caked with scale, unscrew it, and steep overnight in a bowl containing half clear vinegar and half warm water. In the morning the scale will flake off and the head will only need a little rub with a cloth. Note: don’t use on special metal finishes, as vinegar can damage.

For scale in an enamel bath or porcelain sink, dampen a pumice stone and rub away at the mark. Don’t worry about scratching: the pumice is hard enough to deal with the scale but soft enough not to damage the surfaces
