Keep on top of household clutter

 Adopt the mantra:

One in, one out’.

For every new item you bring into your home, look for one existing one you can either throw or recycle.

How to keep tops of kitchen cupboards clean

Kitchen jason-leung-7iuasVqkUjs-unsplash

Do your kitchen cupboards reach almost but not quite to the ceiling?

The tops will take on that nasty, hard-to-shift combination of grease and dust.

Save yourself cleaning time by laying down sheets of newspaper and every so often remove and replace with new sheets.

Smelly microwave?

To freshen up your microwave, chop up a used lemon, put in a bowl of hot water and cook on high for 3-4 minutes.

The steam will loosen the dirt and the lemon will deodorise any lingering smells.

Deep-fat fryer exterior in a terrible state?

Put about a cup of soda crystals (DriPak, about £1 from most supermarkets) in 500ml warm water and just rub away – soon the fat will dissolve.

You’d think with that sort of power, they would be toxic. Not so: they contain no harmful chemicals, enzymes or phosphates – plus they’re totally biodegradable.

Dishwasher danger!

Never switch on the dishwasher and leave the house.

Many homes have gone up in flames because of an electrical connection that just happens to become faulty as you vacate the house.

(This has happened to two of my friends.)

Hot weather getting to you?

Stick a bunch of plump black grapes in the freezer for a few hours, and when they’re nice and solid, pop them into your mouth like sweeties.

Guilt-free and gorgeous!

Battered stainless steel kitchen surface?

I used to have one and I quite liked the scratches (shows some action is taking place!), but if you’re less keen, a good remedy is T-Cut, which is used to eradicate scratches on car surfaces.
